This article reveals the etymology of the Spanish verb ajar (all ēuare), and links to it, formally and semantically, a noun ajo different, by its origin and meaning, from the homograph and homophone noun designating the vegetable frequently used as a culinary ingredient. Other different interpretations of ajar proposed above are reviewed. In relation to this etymology, the different uses and meanings in Spanish of the term ajo derived from ajar are analyzed and explained, then revealing its connection with the word lío. The formal and semantic differentiation of both ajos allows clarifying the confusion that for centuries has caused the meaning of the noun derived from ajar to be interpreted in different lexicographical works as simply derived from that of the ajo designating the vegetable. In addition, it is revealed that all ēuare is also the etym of the learned word alear.Universidad de La Laguna, Servicio de Publicaciones202520252025info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://riull.ull.es/xmlui/handle/915/42159reponame:RIULL.
