Its relation to historic international events and to the development of the historiography, understood as “the science that studies history”, are considered. The article addresses the influence of the various historiographical schools developed during the 20th century. It shows that the increase in the investigations on the history of youth has not only been linked to young people’s own history, but also, and very significantly, to the changes in the historiography itself. Finally, it outlines the current boom in the history of youth, the importance of the comparison as an appropriate methodology for the study of the subjects related with that history, and the role these researches can have in a historiography that defends the return to the "old" Eric Hobsbawm's idea of defining social history as the history of society.[ES] El objetivo de este artículo es analizar los diferentes hitos en la evolución de la historia de los jóvenes, su vinculación con los sucesos históricos internacionales y con el desarrollo de la historiografía entendida como “la ciencia que estudia la historia”. Se tratan las influencias de las diferentes corrientes historiográficas que se desarrollaron en el siglo XX, mostrando que el crecimiento de las investigaciones sobre la historia de la juventud no ha estado solo vinculado a la propia historia de los jóvenes sino también, y de forma muy importante, a los cambios en la misma historiografía. Finalmente, se destaca el auge actual de la historia sobre la juventud, la importancia de la comparación como metodología adecuada para el estudio de las temáticas relacionadas con aquella, y el papel que pueden tener estas investigaciones en una historiografía que defiende volver a la “vieja” idea de Eric Hobsbawm de definir la historia social como historia de la sociedad.Este trabajo ha sido posible gracias al proyecto CSIC 201510I026, Hacia una historia comparada de la juventud en la Edad Contemporánea y al proyecto HAR2015-65115-P, La violencia política de 1936 y el 18 de julio como punto de ruptura.
