| Sumario: | This article aims to discuss the new Christian identity between the 15th and 18th centuries. We explain some of the main elements of this identity and how it was forged by the social conditions assumed by the converso issue in the Iberian Peninsula. This living, active and constantly changing identity was felt by these historical subjects themselves and constantly defended by the Inquisition and by the application of the "purity of blood" statutes. It was perceived itself in daily actions, in business strategies, and in the political positioning of the new Christians. Born in the Iberian Late Middle Ages, the new Christian became a reference of modernity, whether due to his awareness of the time in which he lived, or through his survival strategies, capacity for mimicry and improvisation, as well as his social and geographic mobility developed thanks to his activities. economic and their ability to establish links within their religious groups and outside them. The documents from the Inquisition Courts of the Portuguese and Spanish Monarchy will primarily be the window through which we will observe the invention, conceptions and achievements of these modern characters. |
