Sumario:The growing production of distilled has prompted small farmers to expand agave cultivation, reducing the region’s native vegetation. This research, conducted in 2024 in the Mezcal Region (MR) of Oaxaca, analyzes the dynamics of agave production in the districts of Miahuatlán, Tlacolula and Yautepec, using the SALSA methodology, which integrates data evaluation, synthesis, and data analysis. In the last decade, the MR has significantly increased its area under cultivation, reaching 92,214 ha of Agave angustifolia and 21,691 ha harvested, with average yields of 63.65 t·ha-1. Tlacolula concentrates the largest area (41 575 ha), although there are variations in yields and prices: the average reaches $2,097 t in Tlacolula and $1,685 t in Miahuatlán and Yautepec. Yields (kg·ha-1·año-1) and prices of maguey pineapple show high variability. The coefficient of variation (CV) shows instability: Miahuatlán shows 49%, Yautepec 61%, and Tlacolula 57%, reflecting fluctuations which affect profitability. Technical support and management strategies are required to guide production towards agroecological models capable of maintaining profitability and conserving natural resources, thus ensuring the environmental and economic viability of the mezcal production industry.
