We recover both the recommendations from a selection of 50 publications by various prominent researchers in the field, and some of the lessons learned from the most recent experience in Mexico. The article is organized in two sections: in the first, we review the specialized literature on formative evaluation and offer a brief summation of the lessons learned from experience in evaluation for continued employment in the Professional Teaching Service conducted recently in Mexico. In the second part, we describe the distinctive features of formative evaluations focused on improving teaching performance.Con este artículo buscamos contribuir al debate de la evaluación del desempeño docente mediante una recopilación que puntualiza algunas de las características más importantes de la evaluación formativa. Se recuperan tanto las recomendaciones de una selección de 50 publicaciones de distintos investigadores relevantes en el tema, como algunas de las lecciones aprendidas de la más reciente experiencia en México. El artículo está organizado en dos apartados: en el primero se revisa la literatura especializada en evaluación formativa y se presenta un breve recuento de las lecciones aprendidas a partir de la experiencia de evaluación para la permanencia en el marco del Servicio Profesional Docente llevada a cabo recientemente en México.
