| Sumario: | This work aims to present two unpublished fragments in Nahuatl of two lectionaries, a type of liturgical book quite widespread and used by the Franciscan evangelizing friars during the sixteenth century in New Spain, in which passages of Sacred Scripture, known as pericopes, were translated into Nahuatl, in order to be used, mainly, for the preparation of sermons. Here we present the translation into Spanish of eight single pages, today associated with Ms. 1482 in the Biblioteca Nacional de México, which contains a series of sermons by Bernardino de Sahagún and Alonso de Escalona. The purpose of this translation is to show the translation strategies and the decisions made by the translators at the time in transferring Christian ideas into the Nahuatl language, thereby introducing categories totally alien to native thought into the indigenous vision. |
