Pb and Zn leaching using the Thiourea-EDTA system

Mining tailings stored in tailings dams generally contain sulfides such as galena (PbS) and sphalerite (ZnS). To prevent Pb and Zn from being released by weathering, the (TU) (CH4N2S)-EDTA (C10H16N2O8) system was proposed to carry out the leaching of these metals. Previously, the characterization of...

Sumario:Mining tailings stored in tailings dams generally contain sulfides such as galena (PbS) and sphalerite (ZnS). To prevent Pb and Zn from being released by weathering, the (TU) (CH4N2S)-EDTA (C10H16N2O8) system was proposed to carry out the leaching of these metals. Previously, the characterization of the sample was carried out using the XRD, SEM-EDS and ICP, techniques. According to the experimental results, a maximum Zn dissolution of 19.43% was obtained with 0.3M TU in the absence of EDTA, while for Pb a 43.44% dissolution was reached with 0.3M TU and 0.0067 M EDTA, maintaining the following constant parameters: pH (1.5), temperature (30°C), reaction time (60 min) and particle size (37 μm).
