Sumario:This doctoral thesis focuses on an analysis of the processes of support for the independent life of people with intellectual disabilities from a legislative perspective from the Spanish State level, more specifically; since the introduction and creation of the Program of Support to the Autonomy in the Own Home (PSAOH) in Catalonia. Methodically, a qualitative approach is used, based on the manual analysis of thematic content of semi-structured in-depth interviews that provides the opinion about the program of 35 professional workers in different organizations serving people with intellectual disabilities. The results of the study highlight that the programme provides possibilities in terms of advancement for an independent life by the people who receive the support, but also shows weaknesses that should be orientated towards improvements at different levels: legislative, organizational and distribution of the support. Also identifies a series of good practices and proposals for improvement to guarantee the effectiveness of the right to live independently and to be included in the community with a life support for people with intellectual disabilities
