Sumario:Debates on the creation and management of tourism destinations have increased during the last decades. This dissertation endeavours to contribute to the literature on tourism destinations planning and governance, with special emphasis on border areas. The objectives of this research presented under the modality of 'Thesis per articles' are: 1) to develop a methodology that can help in identifying consumption pattern-based tourism areas of high potential within larger areas such as regions, states, countries, and specifically in cross-border regions; and 2) to deepen in the knowledge about factors that hinder or foster tourism cross-border cooperation. This dissertation relates tourism geographies with tourism management, to cast interesting results which can be followed by further investigations. A number of issues are addressed in each chapter as conclusions
