Resumo:This article takes a chronological journey through the history of the emergence and transformation of the museum's educational role, and interweaves the explanation of this development with another discourse about the narratives museums have built. Trends in art education that have correspond or are still corresponding with these ways of understanding the museum are also pointed out. When describing the chronological developments of the educational role of the museum, the articles tries to refer, briefly, to the historical, political, social, intellectual and pedagogical contexts that have influenced and changed the educational theories and practices of art education in museums.
