Although there is no cure for these pathologies, natural compounds have emerged as a suitable alternative against currently used drugs since they possess increased biocompatibility and suitable pharmacological properties. However, the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) limits the action of these molecules and makes their delivery to the brain a great challenge. To minimize this problem and enhance drug delivery into the brain with an effective therapeutic dose, the use of nanomedicine has shown great potential. In this sense, nanocarriers can deliver natural compounds to the brain overcoming the BBB and achieving therapeutic doses on the target site. In this area, biodegradable and biocompatible nanocarriers constitute suitable vehicles to deliver the active compounds.
