| Summary: | ABSTRACT: Alfonso Fernández de Madrigal, “el Tostado”, made one of the most important contributions in the 15th century on the theoretical support and practical reality of translation that opened the doors, together with Bruni’s work, to modern translation theory. This paper offers an approach to his theory and practice of translating, which sometimes seems to contradict each other. Through a detailed analysis of his theoretical assumptions and a comparison with his translation practice (comparing the Latin originals with their Romance versions), it is shown to what extent both are congruent and, above all, how translation is at a crossroads that will lead it from purely medieval uses to others that are more respectful of the target language and the recipients, more humanistic. |
