Descripción
Sumario:[EN] Cycling in two-lane roads has increased creating a road safety problem that caused, in 2014, 54 deaths, a figure that does not decrease, unlike the drivers of motor vehicles. On inter-urban roads, the absence of infrastructure or protection elements and the speed difference with the vehicles cause severe accidents. Therefore, it is vital to investigate and analyse the interaction of the most vulnerable users, cyclists, and vehicles. The master's thesis aims to analyse parameters that can influence on the conflicts produced in roundabouts found in two-lane roads, inter-urban or peri-urban roads, with the objective of studying the typology and the risk exposure of vulnerable users. It is developed in collaboration with Grupo de Investigación en Ingeniería de Carreteras (GIIC) and within the project "Mejora de la seguridad y operación de carreteras convencionales con ciclistas" (Bike2lane). For the development of this research, a total of 36 roundabouts have been analysed and inventoried, of which 11 have been studied with in situ recordings. It has been necessary to establish a naturalistic methodology and a well-studied post processing of the data in the university department, in order to obtain the necessary information to analyse and characterize the behaviour of cyclists and drivers on conventional roads. The results obtained should be considered as the conclusion of a preliminary analysis, since there are other parameters, like the design of roundabouts, cyclists' traffic configurations, the environment, the human factor or the road education that could influence in the example that is analysed. They have not been considered in some cases for not having this information. Likewise, the analysis of conflicts between cyclists and vehicles, their typology and motivation is a departure information of great interest without data and that would allow to improve the analysis of the accident rate and this research. Finally, it is necessary to recognize certain limitations in the development of the investigation, some of them should be study in depth in the future recognizing in that way, new lines of research and the need to study a greater number of roundabouts of different typologies. All the results obtained and their derived conclusions will allow the elaboration of recommendations and design criteria, to improve the road safety in the roundabouts and their surroundings.
