Descripción
Sumario:The work is aimed at analysing the potential of the Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) for olive oil in Spain as institutions that contribute to improving the economic and territorial institutional governance functions of localised agrifood systems (SYAL). The introduction is devoted to a description of the SYALS for olive oil in Spain and the competitiveness context in which they are set. The recent strong expansion of the number of PDO olive oils seems to contrast with the lack of renown of the oils and the small differentiation return from PDOs. The main part of the work concerns the territorial analysis of the governance processes implemented by the PDOs, resulting in the development of sectoral governance relations in local oil production chains and in the creation of positive territorial, socioeconomic and cultural externalities and also in its contribution to the reduction of negative environmental externalities.
