Sumario:This paper aims to showcase the new prospects in the studies regarding the fields of linguistics in general and variation in particular that computerized textual corpora and the methodology to use them on a scientific basis stipulated by corpus linguistics can help researchers. We focus on two fundamental concepts which are often adopted in the scientific method: on the one hand, absolute and relative frequency, and on the other, dependent and independent statistic variables. These notions should be used carefully and correctly when we want to obtain data from corpora, so it helps us to interpret and understand the underlying reasons behind the data, and it enables us to develop working hypotheses. To illustrate this, we explain the use of these terms in one example referring to graphic and phonetic variation (nuit, nuyt i nit).
