The outer scenery mirrors the heroes’ inner landscape. Happiness and sadness rhythmically flow with water and the seasons ; in a similar way, the passing of time goes by in a slow degradation of the Being, which reduces him to nothingness. On other occasions the aquatic universe is related to affectivity and is therefore associated with love or the Woman, a source of lust and pleasure, whose hold is irresistible to the Man. Evasive and vanishing, water flows through Maupassant’s work and glides nimbly into his vision of society or in the descriptions of natural order. Water is also present in the yearning for freedom and in the characters’ distress. These elements, symbols of ambition, success or failure, sometimes undergo a process of liquefaction that confers a strong feeling of ephemerality to Maupassant’s writing[ES] El imaginario del agua desempeña una función de gran relevancia en la obra de Maupassant y construye una variada red de imágenes acuáticas, a menudo vinculadas a los diversos escenarios de la naturaleza : marítimos, fluviales, lacustres, lluviosos o brumosos. El paisaje exterior se asemeja al paisaje interior de los personajes. La felicidad o la tristeza se mueven al ritmo del agua y de las estaciones, a la vez que el paso del tiempo transcurre en una lenta degradación del individuo que lo reduce a la nada. En otras ocasiones el universo acuático remite al dominio de la afectividad y permite ser asociado al amor, a la mujer, fuente de deseo y de placer, cuya fuerza irresistible subyuga al hombre. El agua, inaprehensible, fugaz, fluye por la obra de Maupassant, se desliza ágilmente en su visión de la sociedad o en las descripciones del orden natural ; del mismo modo está presente en la aspiración a la felicidad o en el desaliento de los personajes.
