Sumario:The medieval collections of Spanish proverbs present contents that challenge the modern reader because of their very heterogeneous character. This diversity obstructs any attempts at classification and apparently contradicts the idea that a proverb remains a proverb forever if a linguistic community has identified it as such. This is not the case: some proverbs disappear diachronically, while others are corrected to adapt to a system that imposes many constraints on statements. With the tools of current linguistics, which have defined the properties of the different classes and subclasses of proverbs, we propose to try to understand the mechanisms that presided over these rearrangements, these evolutions of the system as a whole and its standardization, particularly in terms of categories and semantic conceptualization of the proverb and related forms of sententious utterances.
