description This article analyses the relocation processes that the Portuguese cork industry underwent between the 1880s and 1980s. Beyond the historical-geographical aspects of the cork industry, its importance lies in the fact that it involves a paradigmatic case of a traditional industrial sector of vital importance for a developing country. Such was the case of Portugal in the late nineteenth century, where the change of location of the industry coincided with the country's rise to become the world's leading power in the cork industry. The article concludes that the factors that made certain regions more attractive for the development of the cork industry compared to others changed over the course of a few decades. There were two industrial relocations in a century as companies adapted to technical and organizational changes; this geographical reorganization was therefore due to a variety of factors and cannot be fully explained by just one theory of industrial location.

Més enllà dels aspectes històric-geogràfics del negoci surer, la rellevància de la recerca radica en el fet que analitza un cas paradigmàtic d'un sector industrial tradicional, el surer, de vital importància per a un país en vies de desenvolupament, com era el Portugal de finals del segle XIX, on van coincidir en el temps el canvi de localització de la fabricació amb l'ascens del país a primera potència manufacturera en el negoci. Es conclou que els factors que van fer més atractives determinades regions del país enfront d'altres per al desenvolupament de les activitats industrials sureres van canviar tot just en unes dècades, i amb això la localització de la indústria, propulsada per la necessitat de les empreses d'adaptar-se als canvis tècnics i organitzatius del negoci.En el artículo se analizan los procesos de localización y relocalización que sufrió la industria corchera portuguesa entre las décadas de 1880 y 1980. Más allá de los aspectos histórico-geográficos del negocio corchero, la relevancia de la investigación radica en que analiza un caso paradigmático de un sector industrial tradicional, el corchero, de vital importancia para un país en vías de desarrollo, como era el Portugal de finales del siglo XIX, donde coincidieron en el tiempo el cambio de localización de la fabricación con el ascenso del país a primera potencia manufacturera en el negocio.
