For this reason, the focus on usage is the common thread of this dictionary. However, on several occasions this work makes use of Diachrony as a justifying criterion, especially in the assignment of the grammatical gender of multiple voices. The objective of the present investigation is to analyse the historical references on grammatical gender that the DPD provides in order to show the different uses of Diachrony that are found in this dictionary. Besides, the study underlines the relevance and importance that Diachrony has in this dictionary when determining and establishing the current gender of a given word. In short, this research aims at highlighting the existing relationship between grammatical gender, norm, usage and Diachrony.El Diccionario panhispánico de dudas [DPD] es, en estos momentos, la obra de referencia en cuanto al establecimiento de la norma en español. Debido a ello, el uso es el principal hilo conductor de este diccionario. Sin embargo, en numerosas ocasiones, esta obra recurre a la diacronía como criterio justificativo, sobre todo en el caso de la asignación del género gramatical de muchas voces. Así pues, el propósito de la presente investigación es analizar las referencias históricas que proporciona el DPD en cuanto al género gramatical, con el objetivo de mostrar los diferentes usos de la diacronía en este diccionario y su importancia a la hora de conocer y establecer el género actual de una determinada palabra.
