The acquisition trajectories of a large sample of Catalan and Spanish words revealed such cognateness facilitation effect, particularly in the language of lower exposure. We presented a theoretical account of this effect, based on the language non-selective hypothesis of lexical access: the Accumulator Model of Bilingual Lexical Acquisition (AMBLA). We tested the plausibility of this model by using an experimental paradigm of word recognition. Overall, our study sheds light on the impact of language non-selectivity on the initial bilingual lexicon.Los infantes bilingües adquieren palabras a un ritmo similar al de los monolingües, a pesar de enfrentarse a un entorno lingüístico más complejo. Se desconocen los mecanismos detrás de este fenómeno. Este proyecto abordó el posible papel facilitador de la similitud fonológica entre traducciones equivalentes (TEs), o cognasticidad, en el desarrollo léxico bilingüe. Las trayectorias de adquisición de una amplia muestra de palabras en catalán y español revelaron dicho efecto de facilitación de la cognasticidad, especialmente en el idioma de menor exposición. Presentamos una explicación teórica de este efecto, basada en la hipótesis del acceso léxico no selectivo: el Accumulator Model of Bilingual Lexical Acquisition (AMBLA). Probamos la plausibilidad de este modelo mediante un paradigma experimental de reconocimiento de palabras.
