In this article the socioeconomic, demographic and university environment characteristics are identified, which allows to segment the university population to project improvements through the planning of policies and strategies. A mixed investigation of descriptive scope was carried out, using a sample of 904 undergraduate students enrolled in the second semester of 2016, to which a structured questionnaire of closed questions was applied, through the digital e-survey tool. The results show that the students are young people between 17 and 20 years of age, mostly female, who identify themselves as mestizos, and of single marital status. The studies are financed by their parents and mostly by loans from financial institutions. The conclusions show that the PUCESE undergraduate students use the bus as a means of transportation to get to the university, that they are mestizos and Afro-Ecuadorians, and their parents finished high school.

The conclusions show that the PUCESE undergraduate students use the bus as a means of transportation to get to the university, that they are mestizos and Afro-Ecuadorians, and their parents finished high school.Los estudios relacionados con el nivel socioeconómico y demográfico de los estudiantes permiten contar con datos estadísticos para desarrollar proyectos que vayan en beneficio del pregrado; sin embargo, la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, Sede Esmeraldas (PUCESE) no ha llevado a cabo estudios de ese tipo, por lo que el objetivo del presente estudio fue conocer las características socioeconómicas y demográficas de los estudiantes de pregrado de nuestra universidad, lo que permitirá plantear nuevas estrategias. En este artículo se identifican las características socioeconómicas, demográficas y del entorno universitario, lo que permite segmentar la población universitaria para proyectar mejoras mediante la planificación de políticas y estrategias. Se realizó una investigación mixta de alcance descriptivo, utilizando una muestra de 904 estudiantes de pregrado matriculados en el II semestre de 2016, a los que se les aplicó una encuesta estructurada de preguntas cerradas, a través de la herramienta digital e-encuesta. Los resultados muestran que los estudiantes son jóvenes entre 17 y 20 años, mayoritariamente de género femenino, que se autoidentifican como mestizos, y de estado civil soltero. Los estudios lo financian sus padres y en su mayoría mediante préstamos de instituciones financieras.
