description El propósito de este estudio fue examinar las necesidades y percepciones de los docentes rurales de Chile en relación con el desarrollo profesional de los docentes y el papel potencial de la tecnología en su implementación. Los hallazgos indican que el tipo de desarrollo profesional que los docentes rurales necesitan está relacionado con el apoyo continuo de sus prácticas docentes. En relación con la tecnología, los docentes están abiertos a participar en el desarrollo profesional que integra la colaboración, la reflexión y, sobre todo, considera su contexto rural. Aunque los docentes rurales ven el potencial de los sistemas en línea para superar el aislamiento y para colaborar y reflexionar con sus compañeros, los resultados del estudio identifican la falta o el acceso inestable a Internet. Incluso si este recurso estuviera disponible, no es posible predecir su uso, ya que los maestros también indican que la falta de tiempo es un factor que puede afectar el uso de la tecnología. Se necesita más investigación para identificar el diseño que guía al profesional actual

The findings indicate that the type of professional development that rural teachers needs is related to ongoing support of their teaching practices. In relation to technology, teachers are opened to participate in professional development that integrates collaboration, reflection and above all considers their rural context. Although rural teachers see the potential of online systems to overcome isolation and to collaborate and reflect with peers, the study’s results identify the lack or unstable access to Internet.
