| Sumario: | This work analyzes the occurrence of German modal particles (MPs) and their audiovisual translation in the Netflix series How to Sell Drugs Online (fast). Through the investigation of subtitles and dubbing, we discuss the translation strategies applied to MPs in Brazilian Portuguese. Translating context-sensitive elements without direct equivalents in other languages, such as MPs, poses significant challenges (Schoonjans, 2015). Recent research suggests that modal words in other languages may be relevant for translation and for achieving a broader understanding of language usage (Waltereit, 2001). Although Brazilian Portuguese lacks a unified classification of MPs, there is a growing use of modal elements, which, depending on context, can convey functions similar to those of German MPs. Expressions like mas, aí and é que may, in certain contexts, serve communicative purposes akin to German MPs. An analysis of the sample from the series identified 642 instances of German MPs, with dubbing yielding the highest number of translation solutions (276), 44% of which utilized modal expressions in Portuguese. These findings highlight the importance of further research on Brazilian Portuguese MPs for improved translation practices in the German-Portuguese language pair. |
