Sumario:This work offers an initial study on the categorization of mas and aí as modal particles (MPs). It mains to raise hypotheses regarding the modal function of mas and aí, identifying which assumptions are activated in their use. Even though “it seems difficult to conceive the function of modal particles as being restricted to particular languages” (WALTEREIT, 2001), studies that aim to identify MPs in romance languages are rare. To empirically assess the viability of modal particles in Portuguese, it is provided an online questionnaire, answered by 252 native speakers, that aims to evaluate whether communicative contexts were sufficient to allow the recognition of the modal functions of the MPs. The results show that the modal function of mas e ai (AQUINO, CINTO, KAHIL, 2021; JOHNEN, 1994) can be used differently from their homonyms, which emphasizes the importance of inclusive studies for the identification of a class of modal particles in Brazilian Portuguese.
