Sumario:In order to make a critical analysis of the article entitled “Proposal of an Amplified Misery Index for Brazil and its evolution in the period 2012-2021”, by João Saboia and João Hallak Neto, the evolutions of the proportion of poor people and of the Foster, Greer and Thorbecke poverty index of the distribution of per capita household income in Brazil from 2012 to 2022 are presented. Although the proposed new “misery index” generally follows the evolution of the usual poverty measures, the somewhat arbitrary choice of the indicators that make up the index and their respective weights may cause it to fail to capture important real facts, such as the reduction of poverty in 2020 associated with the distribution of the Emergency Aid.
