| Sumario: | This article intends to analyze the reception of The Third Bank of the River, the translation of Primeiras Estórias, by Guimarães Rosa, to the English language, as well as observing the translating position of Barbara Shelby in the face of the linguistic challenges that are peculiar to this book. For this purpose, I will put together several excerpts from the source text and its respective translation in tables, observing an important resource of the Rosian work: the creation of puns from the subversion of idioms and standard expressions. Based on the analyzed data, the objective of this exercise is to understand to what extent the translation of Primeiras Estórias is closer to the ideals of domestication or foreignization and in what degree the aesthetic aspect, the center of Guimarães Rosa’s work, can be reproduced in the translation process. In due course I also use the collection The Jaguar and other stories, in which David Treece gathers and translates eight short stories by Guimarães Rosa, including six from Primeiras Estórias. |
