This article aims to analyze the importance of the research and the positions  defended  by  Fernandes  at  the  confluence  between  academic  and  politicalbattles.  Desde suas primeiras pesquisas sobre a questão do negro, no início dos anos 50, Florestan Fernandes enfrentou diferentes correntes de pensamento no interior das ciências sociais. Tais embates teóricos ultrapassaram o âmbito acadêmico e tiveram repercussões na agenda por direitos do movimento negro.
