Revista de Letras, Fortaleza, v. 1, n. 37, p. 9-29, jan./jun.2018.This paper presents an overview on the migration and the nomadism of concepts fostering a widening of the horizons in the field of translation studies. The stance advocated here is set in the multipolar axis of transversality and cross-border permeability of knowledge and praxes. We scrutinize two alternative models, first Umberto Eco’s opposition between dictionary and encyclopaedia as theoretical models of semantic representation, and Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s model of the rhizome proposed in A Thousand Plateaus. The tree structure model inherited from Aristotelian epistemology, the ancestral prototype of “strong thought”, is discarded in favour of a process of deterritorialization and reterritorialization densely ramified identified with a “soft thought” of conjectural and exploratory nature. We take a closer look to three principles of proliferation typified by the image of rhizome, contrasting it with the highly hierarchical tree structure model designed through the Aristotelian tradition: connection, heterogeneity, and multiplicity. We focus on the image of the rhizome displayed by the connective interaction between the orchid and the wasp as instances of deterritorialization and reterritorialization and, as such, as an alternative model to describe the process of translation as “capture of code” or “plus value of code” connecting, deterritorializing and reterritorializing heterogeneous becomings. The model of the rhizome becomes a fruitful heuristic device to describe the actual process involved in the translational endeavour, which we have defined beforehand as a cognitive activity and not only as a linguistic transfer.Cette présentation offre un aperçu de la migration et du nomadisme des concepts pouvant contribuer à un élargissement des horizons du champ de la réfl exion traductologique. Notre propos s’inscrit dans l’axe multipolaire de la transversalité et de la perméabilité transfrontalière des savoirs et des pratiques. Nous examinons deux modèles alternatifs, soit l’opposition entre sémantique en forme de dictionnaire et sémantique en forme d’encyclopédie analysée par Umberto Eco, ainsi que le modèle du rhizome mis de l’avant par Gilles Deleuze et Félix Guattari dans Mille plateaux. Le modèle arborescent hérité de l’épistémologie aristotélicienne, posé comme prototype d’une « pensée forte », est abandonné au profi t d’un processus de déterritorialisation et de reterritorialisation à ramifi cations multiples qui représente une « pensée faible », de nature conjecturelle et exploratoire. Nous nous attachons plus précisément aux trois principes de la prolifération typifi ée par l’image du rhizome, par contraste avec la contiguïté fortement hiérarchisée du modèle arborescent hérité d’Aristote, soit la connexion, l’hétérogénéité et la multiplicité.
