| Sumario: | Given the relevance and frequent presence in academic research of the notion of “biopolitics” – developed by the philosopher Michel Foucault –, this article seeks to contribute to the understanding of this notion and its conceptual emergence. To this end, the article analyses the four books published by M. Foucault prior to the initial use of the term “biopolitics” in the second half of the 1970s, aiming so to identify within them the presence of constituent elements of the notion. Elements were found in these books that would later form the conceptualization of biopolitics and inform studies on the subject, particularly the problematization of population and biological life. However, this article did not aim to uncover a biopolitical analysis placed before Foucault’s establishment of the notion; rather, it identified clues related to medicine, biology, statistics, and population present in Foucault’s earlier works that can enhance the understanding of the concept of biopolitics and its historicity. |
