The goal of the present article is to try and understand the phenomenon in recent times, mainly from the end of the nineteen century on, more specifically after Nietzsche and Kierkegaard have laid eyes upon the subject of irony. We intend to work both the philosophical and the communicational aspects, showing how they are bonded. We shall also use the cinema of Woody Allen to exemplify our main ideas.Malgrado o pouco caso que se costumava dispensar ao tema do humor e do riso, nos últimos tempos ele vem crescendo de importância, com uma série de trabalhos realizados que visam recuperar esta vertente fundamental do ser humano, recolocando-a em seu devido lugar. Adorado na antiguidade, divinizado na Grécia e depois pouco a pouco banido do terreno do pensamento, o humor hoje retorna com toda força. O objetivo deste trabalho é tentar compreender melhor o papel da ironia na contemporaneidade, sua revalorização a partir de fins do século dezenove, principalmente a partir do pensamento existencialista.
