| Sumario: | This work aims to investigate the relationship between cognitive losses and depression experienced by institutionalized elderly people. Therefore, qualitative case study research was adopted as a method. The participants were six elderly people over the age of 60 living in an LTCF (Long-Term Institution for the Elderly), located in the south of Minas Gerais. As a technique, the unstructured interview was adopted, in addition to the application of the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). Corrections and analyzes of the tests were carried out, integrating all results in order to identify the relationship between depression and cognitive losses. As a result, it highlighted the relevance of family participation in the lives of elderly people, which is one of the biggest causes of the feeling of abandonment and consequent development of depressive symptoms. Furthermore, the importance of the ILPI work team was understood, which needs to be sensitive to the demands of each elderly person in their uniqueness. The relationship (correlation) between cognitive losses and depression has not been established in these specific cases. |
