| Summary: | This work presents a study aimed to describe the use of the variant uma vez in Portuguese in Itapiranga and São João do Oeste, Santa Catarina, Brazil, with many speakers of Hunsrückisch German as a language of immigration. We followed the methodology proposed by pluridimensional and relational dialectology, according to Thun (1998). This model is based on the analysis of linguistic variation in different dimensions (principle of pluridimensionality) that combines space (diatopic dimension), different generations (diageneric dimension), gender (diasexual dimension), social classes (diastratic dimension), different styles (diafasic) and extralinguistic coments (referential dimension). In this study, interviews were conducted with 16 German/Portuguese bilingual speakers from the two localities, distributed according to age (older generation, GII and young GI - diageneric dimension), gender (Male and Female - diasexual dimension) and socio and cultural (basic or higher education, respectively Cb and Ca • diastratic dimension). Four speakers from Barra do Guarita - RS compose the Control Group. The results point to a great disparity in the use of the variant in diasexual dimension, as women use more the variant and present no stigmatized comments about uma vez. Ca uses the variant uma vez more frequently in relation to Cb, which can assign a prestige for the use of the variant. There was a small reduction in the use of the variant by GI, which denotes a linguistic change in progress towards the non-use of uma vez. The profession of the informant seems to have a strong role for the use of the variant, when while working the speaker needs to use many mandatory sentences, the use of the variant tends to be higher. |
