| Sumario: | This article presents translations into Portuguese of poems by American authors Gertrude Stein and Edna St Vincent Millay. Both were writers who produced poetic works in the early 20th century, and are considered representative authors of modernism. Gertrude Stein (1874-1946), American writer and poet is one of the main names of the Lost Generation. The author lived in Paris and was an influential personality at the time known as the “roaring twenties”, she was responsible for coining the term Lost Generation that would define a generation of artists. Her poetry presents a modern writing with aesthetic innovations in literary forms and the use of stream of consciousness by the lyrical self. Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950), poet and playwrighter contemporary of Stein, received wide acclaim from literary critics for her poetic work and was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in the category of poetry in 1923. Her poetry presents imagetic language that exposes women freedom in a patriarchal historical context. This article presents translations for the poems Daughter (1990) and The house was just twinkling in the moon light (1990) by Stein and translations for the poems Love is not all (Sonnet XXX), (2002) and I Think I should have loved you presently (Sonnet IX) (2002) by Millay. As a theoretical basis, we will use the studies by Nozen & Choubdar (2018) that present the role of the Lost Generation in literature and Cândido (2000), El Hawa (2016) and Costa & Alves (2018) that reflect on modernist writing. In the field of Translation Studies, we will reflect on classic authors such as Catford (1965), Dryden (2012) and Stael (2004) and current researches by Venuti (1995), Britto (2006), Pym (2017) among others. |
