| Sumario: | Soil materials from Yucatan soils were studied to establish the feasibility to use them as cover in solid waste disposal sites, considering that the cover layer must withstand the weathering caused by wind and precipitation. The cover must also provide the slope needed for a good surface drainage system and ease the evaporation of accumulated precipitation on the top of waste cells through temporary moisture retention. Results indicate that a mixture of 65 % sahcab and 35 % kancab (yucatecan clay), by volume, as cover and liner in a waste disposal site, would reduce leachate amount in more than one third of that produced in a site located in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico or any other place with similar conditions, as determined simulating the site using a hydrologic computer model. |
