Descripción
Sumario:This paper shows an analysis of tourism activity in the Mexican Republic States, where the most visited tourism destinations are located. The intention is to identify the economic structure related to tourism activity, employment specialization and the productivity index. We used the tourist statistics derivative from the Mexican Economic Census (2003 and 2008) and estimated a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), the Normalized Employment Specialization Index and the Employment Coefficient, for nine Mexican States where tourist employment is more than 20% of total employment and for each section of the tourism sector, according to the North America Industry Classification System (NAICS). The results show a heterogeneous behavior in the establishments, employment and characteristics of the tourism sector. These results contribute to design of the promotional and development public policies for tourism.
