From these findings we recommend that qualitative research should be done to disclose the informal relations of political parties, with the aim of knowing why the incentives that electoral rules and institutional design should generate are not producing the expected results in terms of the voters’ confidence in elections.A partir de un estudio de caso que examina el marco jurídico-electoral, el diseño de los órganos electorales y las condiciones de pluralidad política en el Estado de México, este artículo muestra qué condiciones favorables en el ámbito de la gobernanza electoral no necesariamente garantizan la confianza ciudadana en el desempeño de los mencionados órganos ni la credibilidad general de los resultados electorales. De manera inesperada, dados los hallazgos de la literatura especializada, esto podría afectar la legitimidad de las autoridades políticas electas.
