From a modern perspective, the text represents one of the first attempts to incorporate fiction into a sermon, although always within the limits prevailing during the colonial period. The work is made up of a unique web of literary and discursive influences which this paper analyses in an attempt to show how it established a bridge between Spanish Baroque and the earliest Spanish-American narrative prose.La portentosa vida de la Muerte de fray Joaquín Bolaños apareció en México en 1792. La obra tuvo nula difusión en la Península Ibérica a causa, en parte, de la acerba censura que publicó la Gazeta de Literatura de la época. Desde una perspectiva actual, La portentosa representa uno de los primeros intentos por incorporar la ficción al sermón en los límites del período colonial.
