Sumario:In an increasingly complex world, the future of the university constitutes a present concern; its analysis and discussion in current debates impel to imagine how this social institution can preserve, in the coming decades, the prominent role it plays in society, considering the challenges and tendencies that demand its transformation. In the near future, the authors suggest the coexistence of three university models in which the main structuring feature is the academic career, which is now associated to the tenure figure, constitutes one of the most important obstacles faced by organizacional change; however, taking into account the imminent generational relay that universities will experiment in México, in the next decade, substantive transformations will occur driving them into processes of renewal.
