Sumario:The Biobio river is an aquatic system in Chile that represents a potential risk for serious environmentalcontamination. Studies carried out during different periods showed high concentrations of toxics such as mercury (Hg), copper (Cu), cadmiun (Cd) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) in the lower third of the river. The added toxic effect of these chemicals is unknown and it is suggested that the cumulative effect canbe greater than the single toxic effect of each pollutant. In order to assess the toxicological interactionbetween these chemicals, we studied the toxicity of different combinations of mercury, wpper, cadmiunand pentachlorophenol on Daphnia magna. These results showed that the mortality of D. magna increasesdramatically in proportion to the number of elements present in the mixture. These results emphasis the importante of the research on the toxicity of hazardous wastes mixtures in the aquaticbiota.
