| Sumario: | This paper examines the changes that have taken place in the People's Republic of China since the reforms approved by the Communist Party of this country in December 1978 which, among other things, involved abolishing state planning in order to let the market regulate the economy. This led to considerable economic growth together with an increase in China's role in world trade and as the receiver of direct foreign investment. Despite the rise in per capita income and the reduction of poverty, however, the country has seen an increase in the inequality between regions and in the distribution of income, together with the exacerbation of certain problems such as unemployment, migration from the countryside to the city and corruption. China has begun to question the validity of socialism, despite defining its economy as a socialist market economy. |
