Summary:Breastfeeding is an irreplaceable affective, nutritional and immunoprotective resource for the mother-child dyad. However, our country has the lowest rates of breastfeeding in children under six months of age. Therefore, this review addresses the anatomical, physiological, nutritional and immunoprotective aspects of breast milk that impact into maternal and child health; as well as the techniques, care and contraindications that are part of this process. It is intended that the reader knows and applies the information in order to specifically promote breastfeeding with a preventive approach that has an impact on improving the life quality of our population.
