To identify the beliefs and knowledge of a groupof rural physicians on the dietary management of childrenunder five years of age, with acute diarrhea. Physicians? dietarymanagement was compared with that recommendedby the World Health Organization. Material and Methods.A cognitive anthropology study was carried out from Julyto December 1998, on ten physicians that care for the infantpopulation ascribed to Hospital Rural IMSS-Solidaridadof San Juanito Bocoyna, Chihuahua, Mexico. Data were collectedthrough focus groups, case vignettes, free listing, pilesorting, and a semi-structured questionnaire, and then crossreferred.Results. The physicians recognized the negativeimpact of diarrhea on the nutritional state of the child, butnot all of them evaluated this state. Prevailing interventionswere antibiotic therapy, fluid management, and feeding recommendations.Among the latter, the most consistent werebreastfeeding, delayed feeding, and gradual feeding. Conclusions. The obtained information is in conflict with WHO?srecommendations, specially with that of sustained feeding. The English version of this paper is available at: http://www.insp.mx/salud/index.htmlInstituto Nacional de Salud Pública2002info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdf0036-3634https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=10644403Salud Pública de México (México) Num.4 Vol.44reponame:Redalyc-IMSSinstname:Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Socialinstacron:IMSSenhttp://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=106Salud Pública de Méxicoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessoai:redalyc.org:106444032024-08-23T15:24:35Z
