Descriptive and inferential statistics with U of Mann-Whitney and Kruskall-Wallis tests were used. The level of significance was of 0.05, with the statistical program spss v.20. Results: 120 adolescents were interviewed whose level of knowledge was rated as average in 60.8% and low in 23.3%. The condom was the most used contraceptive method (65.2%); additionally, it was the barrier method better known (95.8%). Only there were differences regarding the age of the participants (p=0.030). Conclusions: the obtained results in this study showed that it is necessary to improve the quality of information about the correct use of contraceptive methods, which it is expected to positively impact in sexual and reproductive health.Objetivo: identificar el nivel de conocimiento y uso de métodos anticonceptivos en adolescentes. Métodos: estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal. Se incluyeron adolescentes de 15 a 19 años con vida sexual activa que asistieron a un centro de salud de la ciudad de México durante los meses septiembre y octubre de 2014. Muestra no probabilística, 120 adolescentes se autoaplicaron una encuesta que incluía: variables sociodemográficas, de conocimiento y de uso de métodos anticonceptivos. Se empleó estadística descriptiva e inferencial con las pruebas U de Mann-Whitney y Kruskall-Wallis. Nivel de significancia 0.05, con el programa estadístico spss v.20. Resultados: se entrevistó a un total de 120 adolescentes cuyo nivel de conocimientos fue calificado como medio en 60.8% y bajo en 23.3%. El condón fue el método anticonceptivo mayormente utilizado (65.2%); asimismo, fue el método de barrera del que se tenía un mejor conocimiento (95.8%). Solo se obtuvieron diferencias respecto a la edad de los participantes (p=0.030).
