Sumario:This article presents a survey of the origins of applied linguistics as an independent discipline, and of the CELE (Foreign Language Teaching Center) at the UNAM (University of Mexico). An account is given of the history of the CELE, the ways in which the Center has contributed to the study of the new discipline of applied linguistics, and applied linguistics research at the CELE. The history of foreign language teaching at the UNAM is summarized and new developments in teaching and in applied linguistics research following the recent creation of the Special Foreign Language Committee (COELE) are reported.
