These approaches are promoted through public policy, the mass media and cultural industries. It highlights the proliferation of self-help literature, fromwhich functional ideas are promoted. The individual is solely responsible for his success or failure, which detracts from the importance of the different roles played by the structural conditions. The paper analyzes the affinities between self-made literature and neoliberal ideas about the role of citizens.El modelo neoliberal plantea una reformulación de los roles del Estado, el mercado y la sociedad. Sostiene que el mercado es el órgano más eficiente para realizar la distribución de la riqueza. En este contexto surge un discurso que promueve la idea de que el ciudadano es responsable de generar sus propias oportunidades de desarrollo. Estos planteamientos se promueven mediante la política pública, los medios de comunicación masiva y las industrias culturales. Destaca la proliferación de la literatura de autoayuda, desde donde se promueven ideas funcionales para tal propuesta. El individuo es el responsable-culpable exclusivo de su éxito o fracaso, lo cual quita luz al importante papel que juegan las condiciones estructurales.
