However, due to the fact that shrimp are fished with bottom trawls, a method that is characterized by its low selectivity due to the fact that it retains not only shrimp but a high diversity of non-target species, it has been the subject of controversy and focus of attention. Part of fishing authorities and non-governmental organizations dedicated to the protection of the environment, who have expressed their dissatisfaction and rejection towards this type of activity. The problem is that a minimum part of the capture of non-target species is used and the rest is returned to the sea with doubtful chances of recovery.La pesca de camarón en México y en el mundo ha sido y sigue siendo una actividad económica importante, ya que el aprovechamiento de este recurso genera alimento de alta calidad, empleos y divisas. Sin embargo, debido que el camarón se pesca con redes de arrastre de fondo, método que se caracteriza por su escasa selectividad debido a que retiene no solamente camarón sino una alta diversidad de especies no objetivo, ha sido motivo de polémica y foco de atención por parte de autoridades pesqueras y organizaciones no gubernamentales dedicadas a la protección del medio ambiente, quienes han manifestado su inconformidad y rechazo hacia este tipo de actividad.
