The main points of this analysis are the tense relationships which appeared within the indigenous community, regarding power groups, factions, emerging leaders and grass-root community members. Such a study cannot be reduced to the local scene only, it has to be broadened to a detailed knowledge of the corporation itself, its global linkages as well as the type of relationships it established within the municipalities. This ethnographic study explains the successful process of territorial defense, highlighting the participation of local social actors facing recent processes of globalization. Despite unfavourable power relations, these social actors persist in their collective action.El presente trabajo analiza el surgimiento de una organización en resistencia en contra de una empresa transnacional que pretendía imponer una presa hidroeléctrica. Las tensas relaciones que se generaron en el interior de la comunidad con los grupos de poder, entre ellos las facciones y los liderazgos emergentes, así como con algunos de los habitantes, son los puntos principales de este análisis. Destacar la importancia de este tipo de estudios es fundamental, ya que no debe desvincularse la investigación y reducirla a entornos solo locales; por ello fue indispensable conocer con detalle la empresa, sus vínculos globales y la interacción directa que tuvo con la gente de los municipios.
