A classification system is proposed according to the body responsible for issuing the final decision on disputes about the validity and results of an election. This system yields four categories: legislative, judicial, administrative and ad hoc models. The author then classifies Latin American countries, where electoral challenges are presented either to the institution in charge of organizing the election, constitutional, administrative or specialized courts. Lastly, the author reflects on the limits and possibilities of constitutional control over the electoral jurisdiction and outlines the trends in electoral reform currently present in the region.
