Summary:Fisheries activities produce large quantities of non-recycled wastes all over the world. In Mexico, shrimp commercial captures and cultures generate high quantities of non-used heads. It is calculated that these wastes reach up to 32,000 annual tons and only 5% is converted in shrimp meal. In the present work we investigated the effects of the substitution of fisgh meal by soy meal and head head shrimp hydrolyzed (HSH) in food diets supplied to to hatchlings of redclaw Cherax quadricarinatus. Two experiments were realized, both included 30% of protein and 12% lipids. In the first experiment, five diets based on a 70/30 fish meal/soy meal were tested: substituting the fish meal with 0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 2.5% of HSH. The second experiment also consisted of five diets, a control diet (100% fish meal) and four essays based on a 70/30 fish meal/soy meal and substituting the fish meal with 2.5, 5.0, 10 and 15% of HSH. The trials were realized under controlled laboratory conditions in a closed recirculating-water system. Hatchlings were feed daily with 6% of their total biomass, and the quantities of food were re-calculated every 15 and 8 days, in the first and second experiment, respectively. Results showed that in the first experiment the best growth rate was obtained with the diet containing 2.5% of HSH. This diet also presented the highest values for survival rate, final weight, individual gain weight, percent of gain weight, specific growth rate and protein efficiency rate. In the second experiment the highest survival rate was observed with the diet containing 5% of HSH, showing also the highest growth rates and alimentary efficiency rates. Retention of protein circulating into the closed recirculating-water system was negative. The combination soy meal/HSH in levels of 30% and 5% respectively, contributed to an adequate growth rate in the species and diminish food production cost.
