Sumario:This work is about an aspect of twentieth-century Mexican economy and politics which has received little attention: alcabalas, taxes that impeded the free flow of goods and the consolidation of national markets. Those taxes were closely related to the tax sovereignty of the states, revealing that the conflicts between the federal and state governments during this period were much stronger and more complex than we usually think.
